  1. I’m not a teenager but for someone without a job yet. Every teen should take this seriously as it will help them in life in the long run. Build up those skills so if you haven’t got a job you can look online and know you’ve got those skills. Whether it’s typing faster, knowing the ins and outs of google sheets, the basics of coding on python, taking great photos, get better at photoshop or something like that. Those skills can help you if you’re into deep with a job. My suggestion is stick to 1 of those and get better with that before you move on to the next skill to learn but at the same time don’t stop learning.

    • That’s some solid advice! You’re absolutely right—building skills, especially in tech or creative areas, is a game-changer. Focusing on one skill at a time, mastering it, and then gradually moving on to the next is a great approach. Continuous learning is key, even if you’re not employed yet. Those skills can open doors when you’re ready to dive into the job market. Great encouragement for teenagers to start early on this valuable journey!

  2. Hi Dimx

Thank you for sharing your article. I like it, and its very detailed and comprehensive. You have highlighted a couple of important points. Let me talk about one or two of those points. Time management. When you have school work and part-time job you are forced to manage your time effectively between the two. I have always seen that those with part time jobs mostly perform better with their school work than those with no part time work. This is my personal experience. I was forced to have part time job because of my circumstances so I could help with my school fees and still did better that 99% of my class

With part time job as a student you are forced to budget and not waste money.  These don’t become choices but a must otherwise you will loose on both. With part time you quickly become more responsible and mature than your peers.

    Regards

    Richard

    • Richard,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s fantastic to hear about your experience balancing school and a part-time job. You’re absolutely right—juggling these responsibilities can boost time management skills and overall performance. It’s impressive how having that added responsibility can lead to better focus and discipline. Plus, managing finances early on indeed fosters a sense of responsibility and maturity. Your story highlights the real-life benefits of handling both school and work, setting you up for success in more ways than one.

      Best regards,

  3. Finding your interest as a teenager to build a side hustle is important to get one to grow organically.

Your inherent interests can range from sports, enjoying with kids, solving scientific and non-scientific problems, writing stories, and creating cartoons and drawings, and the sky can be the limit.

Kids and the internet can work well to earn actively and passively.

I am exposed to these things living near a high school and kids being engaged outside the school.

    1) Kids can run thrift stores in their parents’ garages or basements. Collecting used items and making them usable by recycling helps the planet.

    2) Collecting brand-name older shoes, fixing them to make them reusable, and selling them at higher prices can be another.

    3) many high schoolers work at a farmers’ market and earn cash during summer and off hours. No screen time, learning to work with customers, work with fellow high schoolers.

    4) I see a father teaching football to his 9th-grade son, who works at a coaching center for younger kids.

    5) In summer, a few high schoolers join and sell drinks and snacks in the neighborhood. They create different kinds of flavors and sell them with small profits.

I had invested my child’s money for years when she was working with a retailer. Getting along with the staff, resolving the accounting balance, and treating and helping customers taught her a great deal moving into life.

I couldn’t enjoy filling out the surveys. But I see many kids enjoy and make money as a side business.

Thank you for this post elevating awareness about finance, budgeting, and managing finances in life, which gives them essential knowledge.

    • Absolutely, exploring interests and turning them into side hustles is a fantastic way for teenagers to grow organically. Your examples highlight such creative and diverse opportunities! From thrift stores to coaching and entrepreneurial ventures like selling drinks, each idea fosters skills, responsibility, and an entrepreneurial spirit. It’s amazing to see how these experiences can shape a teenager’s understanding of finance and business. Thanks for sharing these insightful perspectives on teaching practical life skills through hands-on endeavors!

Of the list of recommendations, perhaps watching ads is not something I’m personally a big fan of, as it’s not a rewarding or fulfilling experience in itself.

On the other hand, tutoring is a great part-time job, and I can say this from first-hand experience — I’ve been tutoring engineering and math courses for around 4 years now, and I first started when I was a student!

    • Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! It’s fantastic to hear about your firsthand experience with tutoring engineering and math courses for the past four years. Tutoring is indeed a rewarding part-time job that offers valuable learning experiences for both the tutor and the student. 5. This blog post offers a comprehensive guide to part-time job opportunities for teenagers, both traditional and online, along with insightful tips on budgeting and entrepreneurship. I found it particularly helpful in highlighting the importance of financial independence and skill development for teens.

One question that arises is: With the rise of online job opportunities, how can teenagers ensure they’re engaging with legitimate platforms when completing surveys or watching ads for money? Given the prevalence of online scams, guidance on discerning trustworthy platforms could be beneficial for young earners navigating the digital landscape. What steps do you recommend teens take to verify the legitimacy of online job opportunities?

I’m glad you found the guide to part-time job opportunities for teenagers helpful, along with the emphasis on financial independence and skill development. Your question about verifying the legitimacy of online job opportunities is crucial, especially with the prevalence of scams.

For teenagers seeking online work, it’s essential to research platforms thoroughly before engaging with them. Look for reviews and testimonials from other users, check for contact information and a physical address, and be wary of platforms asking for personal or financial information upfront. Trusted websites often have transparent payment processes and clear terms of service.

Encouraging teens to rely on reputable job boards, freelance platforms, and survey sites with established reputations can help mitigate the risk of falling victim to scams. It’s also wise to trust instincts—if something feels too good to be true, it often is.

Empowering teens with knowledge about online safety and encouraging them to ask questions and seek guidance from trusted adults can further safeguard their online job-seeking experiences.

  7. Refreshing to see an article on this topic with youth unemployment on the rise again. It’s so true that employment provides youngsters with vital life-skills, even if they/we don’t appreciate that at the time. In addition, as life becomes harder and tighter for many parents, having a school-age teenager who has a ‘side-hustle’, especially an online one that they don’t need to arrange travel to and from, can take the burden off parents who are otherwise constantly being asked for new trainers and computer games and money for this or that trip! There are some good idea here and I shall pass them on!

    • Absolutely! The topic of youth unemployment is crucial, especially with the current trends. You’re spot on about employment providing vital life skills, often underestimated by young people. Side-hustles, especially online ones, not only empower teenagers but also alleviate financial burdens on parents. It’s great to hear you found some valuable ideas in the article to pass on. Encouraging entrepreneurial spirit and financial independence at a young age can make a significant difference. Thanks for sharing your insights!

  8. Thank you for sharing your ideas about part-time jobs for teenagers.  I have a 16 year old daughter who wants to find a part time job after her GCSE exams in May/June so this article will be very helpful.

I agree that part-time jobs are important for teenagers.  Teaching financial literacy in schools in the UK is sadly lacking so encouraging our teens to find paid work is a great way to develop these financial skills.

I think safety is an important consideration for the parents of teens.  If my daughter wanted to take an online job, (surveys for example) I would be cautious due to the sharing of data with an unknown site.  So I feel this would be something I would have to monitor regularly.  However, a summer job or weekend job as a retail associate would be a great opportunity for her.  Meeting and working with people from different areas and backgrounds would develop her social skills and confidence.  Babysitting is also something for us to consider as we have babies in the family so its a great place to start.

Thanks again for a very informative article.

    Elaine

    • Thank you, Elaine, for your thoughtful feedback! I’m glad you found the article on part-time jobs for teenagers helpful, especially as your daughter plans to pursue one after her GCSE exams. Indeed, part-time jobs offer valuable opportunities for teenagers to develop financial literacy, social skills, and confidence.

Safety considerations, especially with online jobs, are crucial, and your cautious approach is understandable. Monitoring her activities and ensuring she engages in safe and reputable opportunities is important.

Summer or weekend jobs in retail or babysitting sound like fantastic options for her to explore. These roles can provide invaluable experiences and interactions with diverse people, contributing to her personal and professional growth.

Wishing your daughter the best of luck in finding a fulfilling part-time job, and thank you once again for your insightful comments!
